Emma Camp is a current third year Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art candidate at Texas Woman’s University (TWU) in Denton, TX where she explores the intersection of scientific research and visual art. She was born and raised in Metro Atlanta, earned a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Neuroscience degree, with a minor in Studio Art, from Lehigh University in May 2024. She graduated with high honors and was inducted to Phi Beta Kappa in recognition of her outstanding academic achievement. During her time at Lehigh, she was involved in several research labs and served as project lead of the NeuroSalon Project, an initiative uniting scientists and artists to communicate the connection between the brain’s ability to learn and change (neuroplasticity) and creativity.

Her recent experiences in research environments have been focused on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, serving as a student intern in the Saelices Lab within the Center for Alzheimer’s and Neurodegenerative Diseases at University of Texas Southwestern. Her work has been featured in VoyageDallas and internationally published on the cover of Structure, a Cell Press publication. She was recently selected to be an artist in residence at The Cedars Union (Dallas, Texas) as a member of Cohort VI. At TWU, she was appointed to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Advisory Board for which she’s been a member for multiple years, has served as an instructor for Drawing Foundations and Understanding Arts courses, was awarded the Gradys Barger Gardner Endowed Scholarship, and inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. In her spare time, Camp can be found volunteering as a photography assistant for her local animal shelter’s adoption website.


ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice centers on the utilization of mixed media approaches, including but not limited to painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, metalwork, and installation, in order to explore the structural and aesthetic parallels between organic systems and scientific inquiry and innovation. Through abstraction, tactile materials, repurposed scientific lab debris, and scientific imagery, I create works that evoke curiosity and awe while encouraging viewers to consider the various dimensions of science and scientific inquiry. Neuroscience is conceptually central to my practice, as it offers an understanding of the most complex and essential organ of the human body - the brain - and everything it controls. Rather than seeing the brain as a purely biological organ, I see it as the site where all experiences are interpreted and transformed, explaining why we think, feel, and behave the way we do. This perspective allows the investigation of questions that neuroscience aims to answer in regards to consciousness, perception, memory, and behavior. These questions shape not only the content of my work but also my artistic approach, which is rooted in careful experimentation, iteration, and material sourcing. The aim is to amplify sensory experience and make these complex and intricate biological systems that quietly sustain life more perceptible and emotionally resonant.
